Grizzly Orienteering hosted its first event in the Flathead Valley, on a brand-new map of Lone Pine State Park created by GrizO member Will Dickinson. Will also designed and set the courses for the event.

 

Nearly 40 people attended the event, including a large number of first-timers who learned about GrizO from a great article in the Daily Inter Lake. The Inter Lake reporter Jeremy Weber and his family came out to the event and completed the beginner course!

 

We'd like to give a shout-out to the Stanfield family - Alan, Asher, Anna, and Brooks - who had the fastest times on the beginner course and then headed right back out and had the fastest times on the advanced beginner course as well!

 

A huge thank-you to Will Dickinson for doing the lion's share of the work for this event, including the mapping, course setting, and securing permission from Lone Pine State Park to hold our event. Thank you also to Ira and Jordan for vetting control locations, placing flags, providing food and music, and lending a hand with anything that came up; to Lia for vetting control locations, staffing registration, and saving the day by finding a lost control flag; to Siri and Caroline for tirelessly providing beginner instruction; to Kim, Eliot, Reed, Greg, and Jesse for help with control pickup; and to Garth for help with setup, registration, and equipment. Finally, a special thank you to park ranger Brian Schwartz for his support of orienteering at Lone Pine State Park.
