Night Ski Orienteering at the UM Golf Course
The New Year 2025 finally brought us some much-needed snow, so this fun night event at the UM Golf Course was held as a ski orienteering event for the second time in three years.

About 30 skiers braved the frigid night temperatures on a crystal-clear night, and were not disappointed by the mix of route choice problems they faced on the course. Many racers reported taking short-cuts off the main groomed trails, and several chose to take off their skis and run for one or two of the legs.

There were some great performances on all the courses. On the short course only six seconds separated the winners (newcomers Grace Davidson and Shane Balgaard) from Kara Browne in 2nd place. On Medium, David Dropinski took the win ahead of Kyle O'Connor.

On the long course, US Junior Ski Orienteering member Liam Browne held off Michael Kelly by just 21 seconds, with Chris Caldwell finishing 3rd, just ahead of Liam's younger brother Euell. Colleen Bue was the fastest woman on Long, just over two minutes ahead of the Ice Badger duo of Caroline Chitty and Georgia Moore.

A huge thank you to event director Emily Johnson (and excellent helper Svea!)! Thank you also to the brave control pickup crew who stuck around in the cold to collect controls: Liam Browne, Euell Browne, Greg Friedman, and Chris Caldwell.

Our ski orienteering season continues with our SkiO event at Lubrecht Forest on Sunday, January 26. We hope to see you there!

We are also continuing are our series of Tuesday night orienteering training, so let us know if you'd like to join the mailing list for that.
