Lubrecht Experimental Forest: Foot-O and Mountain Bike-O
What a day! On this lovely spring day at Lubrecht Forest, we set new attendance records for regular GrizO events, as almost 90 people headed out on one or more of the nine courses that were on offer, including six Foot Orienteering courses designed by Jan Lauenstein and three MTBO courses set by Garth Flint.

Our event director Loy Koch kept everything under control and even managed to get out for a quick jaunt herself, winning the Intermediate course in the process! First-timer (and newest GrizO member!) The Fleming family (Estee, Ted, Leo, and Grayson) were fastest on the Beginner course in their orienteering debut. KC Brewington was second fastest on the Beginner course and followed that up with a solid run on Intermediate as well. Advanced Beginner was won by GrizO Youth Program member Finn Nowels, with another Youth Program member Mox Anderson coming in 3rd, just behind Bozeman's Lucas Henderson. Both Lucas and Mox also headed out on the Intermediate course after finishing Advanced Beginner!

It was a good day for presidents: GrizO Co-Presidents Allison Brown and Boris Granovskiy were fastest on Short Advanced and Long Advanced, respectively, while Missoula Nordic Club President Henry posted a very impressive fastest time on the Advanced course.

On the MTBO courses, the winners were Eric Jones (Long), Michael Moser (Medium), and Darrell Brown (Short).

As mentioned above, Jan Lauenstein was the course setter for the Foot-O courses. Jan is an elite orienteer from Switzerland who spent the year as an exchange student in Missoula. He contributed to GrizO activities in innumerable ways, including mapping, coaching, course setting, and serving as a role model for our up-and-coming junior orienteers. Jan's exchange year is coming to an end this week, and we will miss him very much. In honor of Jan's departure Loy acquired a celebratory cake adorned with the GrizO logo that was shared (and promptly devoured) at the event.

Thank you to Loy Koch for directing the event; to Jan Lauenstein and Garth Flint for setting courses; to Tom Facey, Calvin Olson, and Allison Brown for doing beginner instruction; to Calvin, Kat Franchino, Mox Anderson, Jan, and Boris for collecting controls. Our volunteers are the best!
